Muniss 2021- Zum ersten Mal digital

Muniss 2021

My experience at Muniss

On the 23rd and 24th of April, I had the prestigious possibility to virtually participate in Muniss, the official organization for Model United Nations conferences at the International School of Stuttgart. Normally, it is a 4-day conference that welcomes students from high schools in Germany and from other numerous countries, organized and run by the students of ISS.

Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, a personal meeting of all the students was not possible, but an online platform allowed more delegates to participate with ease and safety.

If you do not know how this organization works, let me briefly explain that to you: during the conferences, the participants, the so-called delegates, are assigned a committee, two topics and a ‘’delegation’’ or a country. The different delegates then debate current problems and considerable solutions in order to find an optimal resolution for everyone. The discussions occur at a very high diplomatic, neutral and academic level: the individual opinions of the students are insignificant.

This year I represented with my other partner, Lenn Mensenkamp, the Asian country of Myanmar in their concern to diminish the production and international distribution of opioids in the UNODC committee that works to combat worldwide issues such as drugs and terrorism.

During the preparation process, we had to write a position paper, a document that presents our arguable opinion about the drugs issue in order to convince the audience of our valid opinion.

Now let me give you our precise views on the two conferences in our committee: before directly starting with the debate, the school director as well as the students of ISS, introduced Muniss to the several participants. Then, we had to join the various committees and create a resolution paper with the other delegates to propose some possible solutions against the rising drug production and distribution of fatal drugs on Friday and further solutions concerning the role of governments in implementing rehabilitation facilities, on Saturday.

We were finally able to start the first discussions, regulated by the so-called chairs, about the eventual changes in the resolution papers in order to vote for or against the final resolution in the last part of the debate, which both turned out to be very successful and beneficial for our delegation.

Some fun activities were also included, for example in the evening of the first day after the debates, our committee played ‘’Among Us’’ and we all got to know each other informally.

Finally, in the afternoon of the second day, all the organizers summed up the debates, thanked everyone for the active participation and said goodbye in the closing ceremony.

Lenn and I both agree on the fact that this has been a very interesting, professional and satisfying experience. Participating in a conference has many advantages. In fact, my personal motivation was first and foremost the ability to express myself rhetorically in front of a large audience. Since the conferences are mainly held in English, regular participation improves one’s linguistic knowledge immensely.

The written elaboration of the position papers and resolutions also contributes significantly to the participants‘ ability to argue and express themselves. In addition to the academic aspects, the interpersonal interaction with students from all over the world is particularly exciting. One gets to know many different and interesting people with different backgrounds and opinions. This allows you to create a large network and expand your horizons incredibly.

All in all, I am totally surprised of how well everything went! Since it was the first time for both of us, we expected something to go wrong all the time. But then we soon realized that we were just nervous and over thinking. The team planned everything in detail and meticulously, it paid off.

At this point I would like to invite all interested students to apply for the next conferences and become part of a unique experience!

MunissMuniss 2021
